I'm currently on the market for a solid anti-virus program (I'm running Windows XP Pro).  Looking for something preferably light on resources not heavy on protection.

Kaspersky because it is very light on resources and has an incredibly high detection rate. Another good one is NOD32.

I was using BitDefender for years, but when Version 2009 came out, I was completely disappointed: It uses more resources and looks just ugly. So I tried Kaspersky and bought it after I tested it for about 2 weeks and I am completey satisfied now. The guys have also a great support.

I have ClamWin on my work computer now, because someone reported an issue with it... I installed it to test it out and it hasn't gotten in my way like every other AV program I've used.

Plus, it's a mix of python and C++, just like Digsby, so I have to stick with it for solidarity ;-)

I use NOD32 (www.eset.com) on all of my systems (home and work) and it is great...super low footprint and updates almost every day on it's own.

Avira Antivir is light on resources, and also has a good detection rate. And its also free.
Avast Home is also a comparable antivirus. Both are quite good and free.

Nod32 because it doesn't keep saying I'm using stolen serial like kaspersky did.

NOD32, registered legally, here. And worth every penny.

Avira Antivir.

It's in the top performers for detection, has really fast scans, takes up minimal system resources, and is free.

I've had really good luck with Avast Professional.  Worth the money and does what I want it to.

I dumped NOD32 and went with Norton Internet Security 2009. Very low resource useage and the AV is top-notch and even beat NOD32 this year.

Avira beats all in detection from what I remember wink
Has Norton finally fixed it's memory hogging problem?

Yes, it has, by a long way. Right now I am running between 4 and 6 MB in memory with NIS 2009. And I think Norton even topped Avira this year, or at least matched it. As a long-time Norton hater, even I am ompressed with it.

havnt used anti-virus in about 7 years now, and not a single infection smile

basic mix of common sense and disabling every feature in IE for both internet and local security zones, then using FF.

i tried installing some adware infected program the other day knowing i could remove the adware after, but the program installed and the adware couldnt without the IE crap available smile

Consider yourself very lucky then, but I don't think I would gamble on not ever getting infected no matter how careful you think you are being. You are just inviting trouble without an AV.

i use Norton Internet Security 2009. its so light, athat it undid all of Norton's notorious reputation as a memory hog and a computer-slower.

But novex's is right. I liitle precaution + a watchful eye plus a firewall (like zone alarm pro, for extra security) is more than enough. Minor ones can be detected in the startup items an msconfig.
