I vote for option #2 first since it will be definitely easier to implement, less error-prone and the quickest to get out there. Pretty much all other IM clients that support Skype do so using the program itself. I'm trying out Trillian Astra at the moment and that's how they handle it as well even though its pretty buggy... You have to launch Skype first and then Astra otherwise if you start Skype after it doesn't detect it, file transfers don't work for me on Win 7 RTM using Astra as well... I need to drag a file into the Skype window or use the Send To menu to send a file but then the file transfer status window that pops up is from Astra, not Skype - pretty rough around the edges and a little confusing at first but still usable to some degree.

I would think you'd have to start with Option 1, and then try to port things to Option 2.
Key thing I use Skype for: Voice Conference Calls. I think a lot of the Option 2 folk just want another IM network, but Skype has a little more than that, namely: - Easy Group Calls, drag another contact into the 'group chat'. - Voice Quality. - Contact Directory. I know it's just a directory, but it makes it really easy to new person.
-------- Option 3 - Skype is making money ( http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/08/31/sk … confirmed/ ). There's probably some merger potential there. I love Digsby, and the Digsby team does an awesome job. But, Skype could benefit from Digsby's technology & design, and they are starting to integrate into social networks.

Option 1 is fine with me. I used pidgin for a long time until the skype plug in stopped working with the new skype version and caused pidgin to crash.
So it is fine to have a fall back scenario when the MultiProtocoll Messenger isn't working with skype any more. U can use the skype app running in the background.
But if Option 2 is straight forward and no issue ... go for it.
On the other hand, often people tend to go for the 100% solution (Option 2). fail. and then you have noting at all. While Option 1 is already realized by other guys (i.e. skype for pidgin) so it shouldn't be that complicated.
just my 2 pence

I agree with the Mixed mode approach. At first seems like it kinda defeats the purpose by running both at once. If i can send and revive text and see my contacts that would be great. If i get a call or want to make a call I would be happy with skype starting up. I don't want to run both at the same time that I could do now but I also need to research how the api works ot understand it more. But if digsby would start skype up when I need to get a call I would be happy with that. I understand the video and phone would be hard to reverse engineer.

11 pages and no further on as to which route to take. Please start with option 1 and build from there, we need a decent Skype client, and this could put Digsby on the map big time!

option 2 is the best of the two. better to have some access and skype not running than to not have this part of digsby at all

I would take Option #1 as a first step with option #2 as an ultimate goal. I want to use it for the chat features. If it could launch Skype for calls, that would be cool too.
Cheers!

and yet more important: they seem to support customized buddy-icons and voice&video chat. On the other hand: no twitter-support, no facebook, no MySpace. Right now i prefer running digsby&skype.

TBH I only use skype due to its pristine audio quality. The other big thing is the ability to broadcast your screen in real time video to other people which is really helpful.
I don't use it for anything else really. And I doubt you can get the video broadcasting working from Digsby as well as the Skype one so there is no point. Which means, the best thing would be to attemp to reverse engineer it so at least chat is possible.

I vote for Option 2
the whole point of digsby for me is to run 1 app that consolidate my presence on all IM.
If I really wanted to use skype with all of its feature, I would just run skype. Option 1 forces me to run both at once, I would not care if digsby works with skype or not if skype is actually running at the same time. Option 1 is a useless feature IMHO. Also, AFAIK, no app currently support all the protocols in 1 app like digsby, some come close but chose skype API. So, digsby can differentiate itself by not running skype API and win my vote(usage).

Where are the official guys in this feature request? Not interested in this topic?
I give you an idea what is going on it the world out there:
The numbers of people using MSN, icq, google talk, ... are declining. All the youngster are using facebook and skype.
Wake up! Integrate officially supported plugins for facebook and skype before someone else does it.
And if that happens, it will be very empty here in the forum.

Option 1 please. For the simple reason the option 2 will take too long and bring too many issues to the table. Do it like Pidgin & Voxox are doing it. Beggars can't be choosers, and users are getting Digsby for free. I understand your need to give the best product possible, but right now I need to run Digsby (as my major IM for MSN, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, ICQ, Twitter & Digsby widget), Run Skype in the background and then load Pidgin for Skype and Mxit. Man... come to think of it... this whole thing is defeating the purpose. How about making 2010 a year for supporting more protocols

Actually all of my children's friends use MSN and I don't think any of them even know what Skype is. Recent reports actually say younger people are moving away from Facebook due to the number of adults using it.

Err the Facebook in Digsby uses the official api as published by Facebook
limex wrote:And if that happens, it will be very empty here in the forum.
Trillian already supports Skype so long as you have the official program installed and running and yet people are still using Digsby and the Digsby forums. Go figure.

I choose Option 2, I don't use skype for the voice features, and having to download and sign into Skype, with Digsby on at the same time, would make it pointless to even use Digsby for Skype.
Just IMing with Skype is fine for a first step.
