POTENTIAL SOLUTION
I had not experienced the google authentication refused error until very recently (despite still connecting to my gmail without fuss), long after all the modifications digsby made to overcome blocked ports etc.
So this solution does not have to do with port/connectivity issues or similar.
HOWEVER, if you have all ports open and google keeps refusing authentication, it may be the case that your password is too weak / part of a dictionary of commonly used passwords that google will only accept if it's coming direct from their official client or via some specific protocol that digsby may not be using (i have no idea, just guessing as pidgin was still able to connect).
I opened a new google account with a common password and tried to login to googletalk with digsby; this lead to an authentication error. I then changed the password to something complex, and modified my digsby accordingly and it logged me in without problems.
My guess is that google have included this as a security feature in the past few months as I never had any problems connecting before (with a weak password).
If you are having blocked-port related issues then this will not help you, but otherwise, try it.
