Identi.ca / Laconia Support

Identi.ca and Laconia are gaining momentum in the micro-blogging realm - especially since they address many of the complaints about Twitter. Users are migrating and when they don't migrate they often have both Twitter and Identi.ca / Laconia accounts. One of the key advantages to Identi.ca is that it's open and actually forwards posts to Twitter. So effectively you could have just Identi.ca support in Digsby and still be updating your Twitter at the same time. Anyway - I would love to have Identi.ca support in Digsby.
Also, by adding support for Laconia (the open source Twitter system which runs Identi.ca) you're adding support for a whole platform. Here's some more info:

If anyone else would like to see Identi.ca support, please speak now and I'll add it to the wish list.

Whilst laconi.ca might be better than Twitter it will not replace it. History has shown that once something has become entrenched in the public psyche it's hard to replace no matter how better the new versions are. Good examples are MP3s which have been superceded by OGG but people will always use MP3s. Google is another good example where by any new search engine will have to be significantly better than Google to make a dent in Googles usage.
That and to many celebrities use Twitter and advertise the fact they do.

Yes but once something is set in the publics psyche it's near on impossible to remove it. Also Google came to be just about the time the internet starting taking off in peoples homes. I'm not saying don't support laconi.ca I'm just saying don't expect it to replace Twitter.
But then again never say never I suppose.
Maybe support for this should wait until dotSyntax has the api framework in place and then people can make plugins for all the social networking sites etc since there seems to be atleast one springing up each week.

Identi.ca (and by extension other sites powered by StatusNet) is clearly not going to replace Twitter. On the other hand, it is a popular service and not just one that "sprung up this week" - there are now 100,000 users posting over 2m messages every month, and its Alexa rank is 5,000 and climbing (see http://identi.ca/group/stats for more numbers). So it really would be appreciated for the Digsby devs to add support for it! That shouldn't be too hard, either, as the StatusNet API was designed to be compatible with the Twitter one.

The devs get requests to add new things every week from this to the QQ protocol. I would rather they concentrated on making the client more stable and fixing the protocols they currently support before they start adding new ones. As I said previously they should possibly go the Trillian route where every protocol is a plugin and this way it would be easier to add new protocols as well as update existing ones.

If every protocol is a plugin, does that mean that some are not provided by default? If so, I can't agree with being ghettoized in that fashion. On the other hand, if it's a case of selecting the plugins you want for everything at the time of installation, that's fine.

Also could I put in a request for this thread to be retitled if possible? Laconi.ca changed to Status.net some months ago.
