to my knowledge it only depends on what kind of memory your pc currently has.

if you have a 512 or less than yes it may seem as its taken more memory.

if you have 1 gig of ram or more it really should not show.   but thats what i have seen while running it on different machiens.

my current machine im using has 4 gigs of ram,  so i cant see anything on this system.

I'm no expert on computer hardware, but my guess is that no matter how much ram you have, 55 mb will always be 55 mb tongue

Also the devs say they're working on reducing the memory usage, since Digsby is still in beta they haven't optimized this yet.

Gothicfreak is just saying that you won't notice it taking up alot of memory, not that the amount it takes up will change.

Anyway, yes I'm wondering the same thing. For such a simple app, why does it take up alot of memory, second to Outlook at 115 MB (which I find that to be alot too). Usually Digsby is up around 70-90 MBs.

Simple as in, its not bloated. Digsby is very feature-full, just doesn't explain why the ram use is so high compared to other apps I use that do more in the background. Digsby uses more RAM on my laptop than Firefox does! =P

I didn't mean to insult Digsby in anyway.

My current memory usage:

Digsby 34.3 mb
Pidgin 32.5 mb
MSN 6.1 mb (running in background) - 29.2 mb (buddy list open)

Note: I just launched Pidgin and MSN for testing purposes a few minutes ago, but Digsby has been running for a few hours. So I think these results are pretty good.

I have never seen digsby using under 50 mb for me on any of my pc's at launch it uses at least 55 and the only features I use are aim/msn.

Pidgin only uses around 20 for me, trillian astra uses less than 20.

I checked again:
Digsby is using 44108 kb, Pidgin is using 32780 kb.

On Digsby I have 2 msn accounts, yahoo, Gtalk and 3 email adresses.
On pidgin I have 1 msn account.

The memory usage on pidgin stays at around 32 mb, while Digsby varies alot.

i am thinking also tho it uses more memory only on how many things you got digsby loading.  for example.  load 2 msn accounts, that uses more memory than if you were using 1 account of msn on it.  so if you got myspace and msn then its going to use more memory. cause its having to process so much at a time to operate what you want it to.

So basicly i think this is normal. but still remember tho,  it all depends on how much memory your pc has.   less memory you have, then the faster its going to eat up memory.

the more memory you have,  you wont see the difference as much.  i got 4 gigs and dont see any problems at all.

gothicfreak, the way you are wording you cautionary statements of RAM usage is ridiculous.  It doesn't matter how much RAM you have... 55 megs used is 55 megs.  Now, if you have less RAM that it will make more of an impact on your system.

The amount of RAM you have does not affect how much RAM the program will use... stop making it sound like it does.

I have to agree on the memory usage. I'm a Pidgin man and stumbledupon Digsby and it looked nice, so I installed it. I added the same accounts as I have in Pidgin. Pidgin use 18 MB ram and Digsby 69! MB :-o

WHY???

I like the looks though, hope u can fix the memory problem, then I might shift to Digsby..

If my statements are so rediculus then YOU tell everybody WHY that SOME COMPUTERS work with NO problem when it comes to RAM, And why some DOES have PROBLEMS.   LIKE I SAID. Ram does have a big factor on a situation like this.  it is normal.

But sence my statements is so rediculus than you tell everybody why its happening so the programmers will know how to fix it.

What Jewbilee is saying, is that you probably say something else then you're trying to say.

The original poster asked: why does it take 55 mb?
Your answer was: it depends on how much RAM you have.

But that's not correct. whether you have 512 mb or 4 gb, 55 mb will always be 55 mb.

So instead of shouting at people who point you to your mistake, just put it straight, and tell us that what you meant to say, is that the more memory you have, the less memory it RELATIVELY uses.

Besides, nobody said anything about having problems with the memory usage, they just noted that memory usage is quite high in comparison to similar apps. And the amount of RAM you have does not have any influence on that.

but 1 thing im trying to find is an older version of digsby.  this version is not suiting me very well.

I have 2gigs of memory, and Digsby is still taking up roughly 60megs of ram....Running windows Vista, no service pack. While I am loving Digsby, that's far too much memory for an instant messenger to take, no matter how many neato things it does. tongue

Even with the upgrade to Service Pack 1 of Vista, I have the same 60 mb memory usage by Digsby
