I don't think they're greedy, per se - after all, the project needs money. I just think that the team put the need to generate money above the needs of their users. That, and in their search for "innovative" ways of generating revenue, they may have forgotten that the traditional ways of generating money are popular because they work, balancing the needs of the developers with the needs of the customers.
Nobody complains about the Yahoo toolbar bundled with CCleaner - why? because it's one toolbar, one installer page and one thing to click past - not Six. Would six generate more revenue than one? Of course, but the CCleaner crew put the user experience ahead of their own needs. Hell, nowadays a single toolbar/crapware install is almost expected, but six is excessive. Likewise, very few people complain about WLM's mini-banner - it's annoying, but at least you know it's there, and it doesn't negatively impact your experience.
Many people compare the research module to Seti@Home and Folding@home, but both of those systems need to be consciously installed and run by users - they're not a covert component installed in the background with the intent of leeching resources from a supposedly idle computer.
So not greedy, just misguided.
