i've been using PC Tool Antivirus (http://www.pctools.com/free-antivirus/) with Ashampoo Firewall-Free (http://www.ashampoo.com)
both of these run without conflict and compliment each other.
they are pretty good on resources, auto updates, and are not difficult to control, through the settings of rules.
(i did not have much luck with pc tools firewall software which sometimes returned errors on closing windows xp.)

i use the stock firewall and Avast Home (Which is FREE)
I used to use AVG Free but at one point in time there was an update and it shut down on multiple PC's untill the update was applied manually.
That coupled with any non resident spyware scanners like spybot and your pretty much golden.

I'm a fan of McAfee, I used to use Norton but it wouldn't catch everything. I had some spyware that I couldn't get rid of - I uninstalled Norton and did a free trial with McAfee and sure enough McAfee took care of it. That was enough for me to make the decision to change.

The best anti virus program, according to all the test sites, is currently NOD32 by Eset. The best free anti virus, again according to several test sites, is AntiVir from Avira.

I use spyware Doctor. It has detected everything that has come my way. I set it to do a full scan while i sleep. Although not free, well worth the money. You can use it on up to 3 computers.

Right now I am using norton 9 and It is the best one I have found yet.
It captures all the viruses in the system and that is why I love to use it.

I use Quick heel Antivir. It has a good detection rate. Avast is also a good antivirus. Both are quite good.

There is a new version of Avast out I am testing on my laptop but it appears to have issues on XP. Once it's had a few more updates to address any issues I might switch to it on the Desktop which is currently running Microsoft Security Essentials.

You can get Kaspersky Anti Virus 2011 with a 3 pc licence for £19.99 here in the UK at present. I'll stick with MSE though as I like free.
