Testers Needed for New Auto-Updater
|

If you have not seen the blog post announcing this test read that first: http://blog.digsby.com/?p=29
Instructions
1) Download and run the installer located here: http://update.digsby.com/digsby_setup_test.exe
Make sure the 'Run Digsby Now' on the last page of the installer is not checked
2) This will install a version of Digsby with the new auto-update system. When you launch and attempt to log in to Digsby it will check to see if it is out of date. Since the version you just downloaded is not the same one as everyone else has it will actually revert back to the version you are currently running using the new auto update system.
3) Please pay attention to what is happening during this process. It will download updates and restart Digsby. Once this is done, log in as you normally would and click Help > About Digsby. Make sure that you are back to version 13706.
4) If anything went wrong, you can download the latest installer from our website and run it. There is no need to uninstall - that is the first thing that the installer does when you run it.
5) Please post your results on this thread so we know if it is ready to be pushed to our entire user base. Make sure to include the following information: operating system, admin or not, UAC on or off (vista only), success or failure, other information about what happened.
6) If the process fails at any point, please email the "digsby.log.csv" and "digsby_updater.log" files to update@digsby.com. Paste what you wrote on the thread into the email as well. Both files can be found here:
You may have to click "Tools" > "Folder Options" to show hidden folders.
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Digsby\Logs
Windows Vista: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Digsby\Logs
Sample Report 1 (success) OS: Windows Vista Account: Admin UAC: On Result: Worked
Sample Report 2 (fail then success) OS: Windows XP Account: Admin Result: It downloaded some files but then logged right in without restarting. I checked the revision using Help > About but it was the wrong one. The I then exited and tried again. It downloaded a few more files, after which it restarted like it was suppose to. I then checked the revision it was was back to 13706.
Sample Report 3 (fail) OS: Windows XP Account: Non-Admin Result: It downloaded files and then I got splash screen that said it was restarting along with an error. The error window had the title "XXXXX" and the error message was "XXXXX". I am going email you the diagnostic logs right now before reinstalling.

Thanks for the news steve.
OS: Windows Vista Account: Limited User Account UAC: On Result: Worked*
*Digsby loads with Administrator instance after the Update. That was the expected outcome by me but the expected result of the test seems otherwise.
Some chats from IRC:
<McoreD> ok i have build 13706 and just finished downloading the test exe <McoreD> i am not going to exit digsby, run the installer as it is <McoreD> cool, setup loaded after uac prompt. An instance of Digsby is running. Please close it and press OK to continue. <McoreD> closing... <McoreD> installing...
<McoreD> okay, the setup has checkBox for Run Digsby now.. if i press OK, it will load Digsby as Administrator but this is understandable <McoreD> now i just quit it and loading Digsby as limited user <Brok3n_Halo> cool <McoreD> Downloading Updates...
<McoreD> download done. prompted for Admin pass. splash screen displayed. restarted with an instance of Digsby as Administrator <McoreD> this is again understandable. is this the expected outcome? <Brok3n_Halo> It's admin? <McoreD> yes <McoreD> that is how technically it would happen <McoreD> because the installer ran as Admin <McoreD> the way i say Admin or not is this way <McoreD> in LUA Digsby i have Auto logon ON <McoreD> in Admin Digsby i have Auto log OFF <McoreD> if it loaded as Admin Digsby it would not auto logon <Brok3n_Halo> after the manual installer part, did you start digsby with the checkbox? <McoreD> it did what i expected to happen though <McoreD> did it do what u expected to happen? <Brok3n_Halo> it depends, on if you started it from th installer <Brok3n_Halo> if the initial digsby that performed the update wasn't elevated, the new digsby shouldn't be either <McoreD> i quit the Admin Digsby instance that loaded from Installer
<McoreD> ok Brok3n_Halo, running second time now <McoreD> this time no digsby load up from installer <Brok3n_Halo> cool <McoreD> Brok3n_Halo, have to say it is Admin Digsby <Brok3n_Halo> damn <McoreD> it offered updates at 5.11 MiB downloaded <Brok3n_Halo> hmm, I'll have to look into the admin thing moday morning <Brok3n_Halo> yeah, thats how big the next update will likely be <Brok3n_Halo> the version is just the next version, though only partialy complete and untested, and it "updates" back to the current version
Happy testing!

OS: Windows XP SP2 Account: admin Result: success, but... when I logged in after the update, I couldn't log in with my Yahoo! account. After I re-entered my password, all was well.

OS: Windows XP SP2 Account: Admin Result: Success, but my skins were gone, that doesn't normally happen when updating.

OS: Windows XP SP2 Account: Admin Result: It downloaded some files (about 5 MB) but then logged right in without restarting. I checked the revision using Help > About but it was the wrong one (Build 13987). I then exited and tried again. It downloaded a few more files (lasted less then a second), after which it restarted like it was supposed to (with a splash showing that digsby is updating). I then checked the revision again and it was back to 13706.

OS: Windows XP SP2 Account: Limited user account Result: Error Even though it asks for my administrator account and password it says: cannot find the file (file does not exists) no updater log found As a administrator the updater is working as it should be
And now I do not have the sufficient rights to even launch the application, not to mention that even it does not exist in my start menu
